As you know, Bonaire imports almost all of its products. The packaging of these products creates a huge amount of waste. All this waste goes to our landfill, but not all packaging materials are equally harmful to our environment. Paper only lasts a month, cardboard decomposes in about two months, tinned cans take 50 years to break down and plastic… well, plastic can last forever…
That is why we are very excited to present our plastics pilot project called ‘TRASH TO CA$H’, which we are going to run in the month of May 2016. In this pilot local waste-management company Selibon N.V. will be working together with the Plastic Soup Foundation and Boneiru Duradero to reduce the amount of plastic going to our landfill. The goal is to make products out of recycled plastic, right here on Bonaire. By the end of 2016 we will be transforming plastic waste material into shiny new and useful products, hence the name TRASH TO CA$H! The pilot is made possible through the support and funding of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature in the Netherlands (Wereld Natuur Fonds (WNF).
In the coming week we will inform you about the progress of our pilot so keep an eye on our Facebook page Boneiru Duradero Portal. Also make sure not to miss out on the Plastics EXPO that we are organising on the 28th of May at Plasa Medio Ambiente, from 10 AM to 3PM.
